NETGEAR To Deliver High-Performance Wireless Networking Devices For Business and Hot Spots
NETGEAR to Incorporate Intel® IXP422 Network Processor Into New Line of ProSafe Wireless Access Points Targeted at Value Added Resellers (VARs), Wireless Solution Providers and Business Customers
SANTA CLARA, Calif. — November 3, 2003 — NETGEAR, Inc., (Nasdaq: NTGR) a worldwide provider of technologically advanced, branded networking products, today announced they have integrated the Intel® IXP422 network processor into their growing ProSafe family of business networking products designed for small- to medium-sized businesses (SMB) and hot spot providers. The new line of affordable wireless access points will provide the enterprise class performance, security and scalability required to support the demanding wireless applications of businesses and hot spot environments.
Designed to meet the needs of SMB customers in larger office deployments, and equally suited for hot spot or public access Wi-Fi implementations, NETGEAR’s ProSafe wireless access points will be based on the Intel IXP422 network processor, a single-chip solution based on the Intel® XScale core. The Intel network processor will enable higher performance, enhanced security utilizing integrated cryptography and the use of a PCI bus giving NETGEAR the flexibility to integrate 802.11b, 802.11g or dual-band 802.11a/g.
"Intel is providing us with a solid platform upon which we’re building a line of affordable high-performance business-class products that will meet the demands of our business users now and into the future," explained Patrick Lo, Chairman and CEO of NETGEAR. "With our continued focus on developing and delivering best-in-class networking solutions to the SMB sector, the selection of the Intel network processor gives us a versatile processor that integrates the robust security features and wire-speed performance demanded by small and growing businesses."
"Small- and medium-sized businesses are going mobile and the demand for secure wireless performance is well met by the combination of the Intel IXP422 network processor and NETGEAR’s ProSafe wireless access points," said Doug Davis, general manager, Intel Network Processor Division. "Being ready for the upcoming 802.11i standard through the headroom and performance of the IXP422 network processor serves these customers well in ensuring software upgrades can not only meet the standard, but bring an assurance of excellent performance."
Utilizing the Intel IXP422 network processor, NETGEAR’s ProSafe wireless access points will include DMA (direct memory access) capabilities which will enable the embedded network processor engines to handle data movement while freeing the Intel XScale core to implement a host of enterprise-class features including client authentication, enforcement of access authorization policies, remote secure management, and various gateway control functions. Security will be enhanced with the incorporation of Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) and AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) protocol that is part of the upcoming 802.11i standard.
NETGEAR's new ProSafe wireless access points will be available in Q4 2003 through value-added resellers, direct mail and e-commerce retailers.
